KUNG FU confused the crap out of me!!!!!

Growing up Asian American in the 1970's and 80's was a confusing time for me. What complicated matters was this TV show called Kung Fu starring David Carradine, the plot is as follows:

In the late 19th century, Kwai Chang Caine was the orphaned son of an American man and a Chinese woman. He was raised in a Shaolin monastery, and was trained by the monks to be a Shaolin master.

After becoming a master, however, due to a violent incident in which Caine killed the emperor's nephew, he fled China to escape legal prosecution. Caine ended up in the American Old West during which time he discovers that he has a half-brother, Danny.

Although it was his intention to find Danny in a way which would escape notice, the demands of his training as a priest in addition to the sense of social responsibility which was instilled within him during his childhood, forced Caine to repeatedly come into the open to fight for justice. He would then leave his new surroundings in a further search for anonymity and security.

This conflict between a desire for anonymity and a sense of social reponsibility is conveyed through the frequent use of flashbacks. In these flashbacks, the adult Caine (Carradine) recalls a particular lesson during his training in the monastery while a child (Rad Pera) by his teachers, the blind Master Po (Keye Luke) and Master Kan (Philip Ahn).

Ok thats cool and all but I have a few questions!!!

First of all, why do you cast a white man to play a Chinaman??? Bruce Lee was around at the time (Some say he wrote the pilot). That confused the hell out of me growing up. I was already called many ethnic slurs at school and now this obviously white dude is showing up on my TV screen insulting my intelligence. Cmon now!!!

Ok, secondly there was this episode where he goes into a camp full of chinese railroad workers. Obviously the conditions are tough already. The workers were badly mistreated. So, he goes in there and the people ask him to help them. Since he obviously is a kung-fu master and all. So, what does he tell them in his stilted, affected fake pigeon engrish(yeah I said it!!!), "I DO NOT WISH TO CAUSE TROUBLE HERE!!!" WHAT THE HELL!!!!Your peeps are being discriminated against and you have the tools to KICK SOME ASS and you do nothing!!!

Anyways, the show pissed me off and David Carradine still to this day is playing the white travelling Chinaman. I guess his Karmic curse is that he will be remembered for that role until his dying day!!!!
